What is Tommy V?

Tommy V is a hero workout named after Senior Chief Petty Officer Thomas J. Valentine who died in a training accident in Arizona, on Feb. 13. This hero WOD also made an appearance on the CrossFit Games Regionals 2015.

What is a good time to beat for Tommy V?

According to the WOD Time Calculator, the good time to beat for an advanced athlete is 13:41, this time should get you to the top 20%.

How to get a good time in Tommy V?

If you look at the Tommy V, you will see a total of 45 thrusters with 115/75 lbs and 27 rope climbs. Yeah, 27 rope climbs, that’s a lot! As you can see the WOD is won or lost on the rope climbs and it is important to think about all those rope climbs since first round. Also, make sure to avoid injuring yourself during rope climbs!

There is no need to blaze through the thrusters as quickly as you can because saving extra 10 seconds is not worth the higher heart rate.

Anyway, I still think that you should do all thrusters unbroken, just don’t rush, take your time. The only hard set is set of 21 thrusters, but it shouldn’t be a problem because the workout starts with that set.

Split the thrusters only if you are lighter weight and you know that you will blaze through the rope climbs. In this case, going for 8+7+6, 8+7 and 5+4 thrusters should be faster than going unbroken.

By the way, don’t to thrusters unbroken if you know they will be problem for you, do them unbroken only if you are confident about your thrusters.

Rope Climbs

This is the most critical part of the workout as most of the athletes will get stuck there. Rope climbs will take about 70-80% of the total workout time.

It is important to start very slowly and take about the same rest between the reps as you want to avoid the situation where you will burn out and have to take much longer rest between each rope climb.

Also, don’t forget about proper technique and use your legs a lot to save forearm muscles and hands as much as you can.

Start slowly, finish quickly

If you have followed the strategy and you are in the last round, then it’s time to push the pace. Blaze through the 9 thrusters and 6 rope climbs. There is no need to save energy anymore. Last 6 rope climbs are going to be very hard but think about the finish line and get through them as quickly as possible.

11 WODs With Thursters That Will Challenge You (+ Good Times To Beat)

Thrusters! I don’t know about you, but I hated thrusters when I started CrossFit 5 years ago, and I still hate them. I bet there are some thrusters lovers but unfortunately, I am not one of them, but that doesn’t mean I don’t do thrusters regularly!

The only reason why I hate thrusters is that they are one of the hardest CrossFit exercises and I always breath heavy after every WOD that involves thrusters. They can be done at very high intensity, and they work almost every muscle in your body.

How to get good at Thrusters?

There are only two strategies how to get as quickly as possible through thrusters depends on how heavy thrusters are for you.

Go unbroken!

For example, let’s consider you are doing Jackie.

For Time
1000 meter row
50 Thruster 45 lbs
30 pull-ups

Jackie is WOD with 50 light thrusters that can be done with a fast pace, only limiting factors are fatigued quads and elevated heart rate from the rower but most of the people will be able to do all thrusters in 1-2 sets unbroken. Elite athletes will even speed up the squat and pull the bar back to the squat during thrusters to get through 50 thrusters quicker.

So, go through the thrusters unbroken if your WOD is similar to the Jackie or it has number of reps you know you can do unbroken quickly.

Split those sets more than you think!

For this example, I will use 14.5/16.5.

For Time 21-18-15-12-9-6-3
Thrusters 95/65 lbs
Bar Facing Burpees

I have met many people who went unbroken in all the sets, and none of them was able to finish this WOD under 10:00 while when I have done this WOD in 9:50 only sets I have done unbroken were set of 6 and set of 3. I am not saying that going unbroken is the bad thing, but you need to have a capacity for that.

For me, the workout looked like this 21=8+7+6, 18=7+6+5, 15=6+5+4, 12=7+5, 9=5+4, 6=6 and 3=3. Why did this help? I have found out that splitting the sets but keeping rest short and trying to finish reps quickly leads to lower heart rate and higher average pace.

The reason why that works is that you can always pick up the bar immediately after the second movement as you know that there is an only small set of reps waiting for you.

By the way, I have used this strategy even in 17.5 (10 RFT, 9 Thrusters 95/65 + 35 DUs) where I went for 5+4 thrusters in all the sets, except last round where I went unbroken, and I have finished in 9:10.

Another example of when to go unbroken and when to split

Let’s consider a ~12-minute chipper that starts and ends with 20 Thrusters 95/65 lbs. First thrusters should be done unbroken as the weight is relatively easy and reps are doable unbroken. I would only split thrusters into two or three sets if next movement is focused on pushing, like HSPU but last thrusters should be split into 2-3 quick sets instead of going unbroken but slowly, go unbroken on them only if you still have the energy to go quickly.

And the last example is 5 Rounds of 9 Thrusters 135/95 lbs, and 18 Box Jumps 24/20″. There is no need to go unbroken on the box jumps, even in the first round as workout is focused a lot on quads. I would probably go for three sets of 4+3+2 with quick rest in the between, and I believe I will be faster than someone doing 5+4 or even unbroken set of 9.

30 Minutes are doable for all athlete levels. Scale reps down to 15/15 or 10/10 if you can’t get to the thrusters until 2:30 and if you miss the thrusters just repeat it in the next interval.

If you have time after thrusters, you may even try to add weight for few rounds.

What is “good time to beat”?

Beating “good time to beat” is not an easy task and I want to show you how you must perform if you want to beat that time.

I’ve been doing CrossFit since 2012 and I am able to beat the good time to beat in about 90% of situations. I usually fail to beat it only if workout consists of my weakness like high volume muscle ups or high volume heavy squats.

How to beat “good time to beat”?

When I was making the calculator I wanted to make “good time to beat” to be very challenging and you should be able to beat it only if:

  • You are very good at CrossFit
  • Workout consists of your favorite movements
  • Workout is in your favorite time domain
  • Difficulty of movements in the WOD is appropriate to your skills

How did I beat good time to beat in this WOD?

I have done sample workout (check above) to show you how it looks if you crush good time to beat.

Workout was right in my wheelhouse because I am pretty lightweight guy (165 lbs), I am very great in the lightweight and bodyweight movements where I can just keep moving and there was just enough reps in each set so I could do all sets unbroken.

Goal was to do 10 KB Golbet Squats unbroken and go right into 10 KB SDHP without putting kettlebell down than slow down little on burpee box jumps to recover little before kettlebell in the next round.

I was able to keep high pace in all rounds except round #4 which was just ~5 sec slower than my average round.

WOD Time Calculator told me that good time to beat for this WOD is 9:35 while my time was 6:41.

I have tested many WODs already but I was never able to beat good time by so huge margin.

How other people did in that WOD?

We have done this WOD on our Sunday class and I’ve set time cap to 15 minutes as app recommended. Our results were following:

    • 6:41 – Me
    • 8:02
    • 9:35 – Good time to beat
    • 11:05 – Scaled
    • 11:13
    • 12:32
    • 12:41 – Scaled
    • 13:08
    • 14:40
    • 15:00 – Time Cap
    • 4+10

I am delighted about how accurate data from calculator are compared to the real results and I am still working on improving these numbers.

Hero WOD “Paul”

5 Rounds for time
50 Double Unders
35 Knees to Elbow
20yd Overhead Carry 185 lbs

“Pittsburgh Police Officer Paul John Rizzo Domenic Sciullo II, 36, was shot and killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic disturbance call on April 4, 2009. He was engaged to be married with Lisa Esposito.” –

What is good time for hero WOD Paul?

Right now our app doesn’t have overhead carry movement in the database.

Hero WOD Paul is all about those knees to elbows, 50 double unders are easy if you know how to do them, overhead carry is heavy and challenging but distance is pretty short. Only movement where you have to be smart are those knees to elbows.

It is total of 175 knees to elbows and if you are not smart you will burn out your abs. I was going for sets of 4-6 reps on knees to elbows and I was taking quick rest. I was able to hold that pace in all 5 rounds.

You can try to go for one big set in each round and than just finish it but I don’t think it’s great idea.

You can do the Paul under 20 minutes even when you are doing small sets like me. In my opinion good time for this WOD will be under 25 minutes.
